The process of cell division is a key component of the cell cycle, an ordered sequence of events that estends from the time a cell is first formed from a dividing parent cell untill its own division into two cells.

Most of the cell cycle is spent in interphase. This time when a cells metabolic activity is very high and the cell performs its various functions within the organism. Moreover, a cell in iterphasse increases its supply of proteins, creates more cytoplasmic organelles, and grows in size. additionally, the chromosomes duplicate during this period. Typically, interphases lasts fot at least 90% of the total time required for the cell cycle.

Among sexually reproducing organisms, cell division is the basic of sperm and egg formation.
The part of the cell cycle when the cell actually divides, accounts for only about 10% of the total time required for the cell cycle. The mitotic phase is divided into two stage, called mitosis and cytokinesis, although the second stage begins before the first one end.
Prokaryotes reproduce by a type of cell division ccalled binary fission. In typical prokaryotes, most genes are carried on a circular DNA molecule that, associated protein, constitutes the organisms single chromosome. Although prokayotic chromosomes are much smaller than those of eukaryotes, duplicating them in an orderly fashion and distributing the copies equally to two daughter bacteria is still a formidable task.
